| обьяснение | Didier Pironi disobeyed team orders and overtook Villeneuve. Both drivers were supposed to be conserving fuel and should have finished in the order they were ten laps before the finish, Gilles thus backed off and assumed the race was his. Didier caught him by surprise by overtaking him after they had been circulating together for many laps. After the race Gilles was furious and vowed never to speak to Pironi again.
Unfortunately, indeed they never spoke again because Villeneuve had a fatal accident only 2 weeks afterwards in Zolder, Belgium.
